Portable Butane Stove

With Camping becoming more and more popular across the globe, its no wonder that there are a huge range of the Portable Butane Stove on the market. Whether its just a small one for yourself, or a larger one for your family there are plenty of these on the market. However, in my opinion you are much better off getting a Portable Gas Cooker, that runs on Propane. For starters, butane usually only comes in small cans. When you are heating up a big pot of water it will chew threw these like there is no tomorrow, and you will spend a lot of money replacing them. Often you need to take a dozen of these cans just to last a week, which is a nuisance in terms of space. A Portable Gas Cooker tends to work better (propane or LPG).

The next issue that you have with a Portable Butane Stove is that they are not very big, and many don’t come with wind breaks. Being small it takes a lot of time to do bigger meals, and a wind break means that they are not as effective either. Sure, Butane burns 12% more effectively as Propane, and it costs less but you pay more for the packaging, and it costs you more in the long run. One of the biggest shortfalls of Butane is that in temperatures below zero (a large portion of the world’s camping!) the gas will freeze up, basically eliminating the possibility of cooking any food! This can be a real issue, so be very aware of it!

A Portable Butane Stove is handy though because they are very cheap (even the cans are cheaper if you buy a huge number together) and they are quite compact. If its just you camping in the bush then these are good to use, and most come with an automatic lighter which is helpful. At the end of the day it comes down to what you want to use the burner for. For a family I would suggest using propane is a much better option, but just for an individual a Portable Butane Stove would work fine.

Propane can be stored in big bottles though, meaning its cheaper to fill up and it lasts for a long time. This is good for camper trailers and four wheel drives. The other alternative, which is good for hikers is a Metho Burner, but these can be messy and annoying to use. Simply think about what you want the burner to do and then go from there!
