Trangia Cooker
Buying the right type of cooker for the right application is the biggest decision that you will make. There are a huge number of cookers on the market, and the Trangia Cooker has become a very popular item. These are basically a kit that is light weight and packs up together neatly, enabling you to cook anything that you need. Of course, these are not designed to cook full on meals for huge crowds, but they work perfectly for 1 – 5 people. There are a huge number of different kits that you can get, with different sized pans and pots, along with different burners and made out of different materials. A Portable Gas Cooker is truly a good investment for both hiking and camping.

Most of these come with recommendations for the number of people that you are going to use it for. You can buy a large one that will cook for up to 5 people, or a mini Trangia Cooker which might only cook well for a single person. These are primarily used by those who enjoy hiking, as space and weight is very limited. These pack up smaller than the size of even a very small sleeping bag, and they are usually made of aluminum. What this means is that you can cook decent meals without weighing down the backpack, or taking up all of the space!
A large majority of the Trangia Cooker sets run off metho spirits, although some will run on other fuels, and there are the more expensive ones that can run off several different types of fuel. I don’t really like metho spirits because it’s hard to see if the flame is a light, you have to dry the burner and pour excess fuel back into the bottle and other fuels tend to burn hotter. However, for hiking this is a great fuel. Alternatively you can use a small burner that runs on Butane or Propane (assuming that it fits) with the Trangia Cooker.
If you are spending a lot of time in the bush and weight and space doesn’t really affect you then I would recommend a normal gas bottle linked to a bigger burner. These are able to cater for a much larger crowd, and they are cheaper to run. Of course though, they are totally useless if you want to shove them in your backpack with the rest of the gear. Ultimately it comes down to making the right decision in what to get. Don’t get a huge, heavy cooker if you want to take it hiking because it will make your trip a real nightmare. Match your Portable Cooker to your requirements and you won't have an issue.
